Health Education Building

Creating a ripple effect through health education

The new Health Education Building redefines health science education at the University of Kansas Medical Center and has national implications for interprofessional and interdisciplinary team learning. Located on the prominent corner of 39th and Rainbow, the facility serves as a landmark building at the gateway to campus.

Location: Kansas City, KS
Size: 171,000 SF

The soaring space between the transparent enclosure and the functional ‘box’ within is flooded with light, creating architectural design without compromising a sense of institutional purpose.”

John Gaunt, former dean of KU’s School of Architecture, Design & Planning

Designed through a partnership with CO Architects, the spaces inside the HEB include technology-enhanced environments for experiential learning (active classrooms, simulation center, clinical skills labs and learning studios and labs), clinical training and design of spaces that enhance the social and collaborative aspects of learning. The ripple effect of this new facility can be felt throughout campus as current education space is reused in new ways.
